How do you get more reviews without breaking platform rules?

Ask every customer the same way, use the tools each platform provides, and never pay or filter for good reviews. Then reply to every review.

Ask every customer, in the same neutral way, right after delivery or a finished job. Use the review tools each platform gives you, never offer anything in exchange for a review, and reply to every review within a day. That grows reviews steadily and keeps you inside platform rules and the law in both the UK and USA.

Why does it matter how you ask?

Platforms penalize selective asking, sometimes called review gating, where only happy customers are invited. Amazon bans it outright. Send the same request to everyone.

Which review tools are allowed?

  • Amazon’s Request a Review button, and Vine for new products with fewer than 30 reviews.
  • Trustpilot’s automatic invitations after each order.
  • A direct Google review link sent by text or email after a job.

What does the law say about fake reviews?

The FTC’s rule banning fake and paid-for reviews took effect in the US in October 2024. In the UK, the DMCC Act has banned fake reviews and hidden incentivized reviews since April 2025. Buying reviews, writing your own, or rewarding only positive ones are all off the table.

Should you reply to bad reviews?

Yes. A calm reply that owns the problem and says what you’ve changed often does more for conversion than several new five-star reviews, because buyers read the negative ones first.
