Why is my Shopify store slow, and does the speed score matter?
Usually unused app scripts, oversized images and chat or review widgets. Judge speed on real-user data in Search Console, not on the lab score.
Most slow Shopify stores are slow for the same three reasons: apps you’ve removed that still load scripts, oversized images, and third-party chat or review widgets. The speed score itself matters less than you’d think. Judge your store on real-user data in Google Search Console, which shows what shoppers actually experience.
Is the Shopify speed score accurate?
It’s a lab test of one page on a simulated phone. It’s useful for spotting problems, but it doesn’t reflect your real customers’ devices or connections. Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report uses data from real Chrome users, and that’s the data Google uses.
Which speed numbers affect sales?
- Largest Contentful Paint on product pages: aim for under 2.5 seconds on mobile.
- Interaction to Next Paint on add-to-cart: aim for under 200 milliseconds.
- Cumulative Layout Shift on mobile: aim for under 0.1, so buttons don’t jump as the page loads.
How do you speed up a Shopify store?
Remove leftover app code from the theme, resize and compress images, load chat and review widgets only when they’re needed, and cut the number of fonts. On most stores we audit, that’s worth more than switching themes.
Should you rebuild instead?
Only if the theme itself is the problem, for example an old theme with heavy sliders built in. If you do rebuild, map every URL so rankings carry over. Our store build team builds Shopify stores that load in under 2 seconds.
